The EU parliament adopted legislation to standardize smartphone and tablet charging cables to USB-C chargers beginning in 2024, with laptop charging ports following suit until 2026.
There were 602 votes for, 13 against, and 8 abstentions. The UK government stated that it is not being considered at this time. However, Northern Ireland must adhere to the post-Brexit guidelines.
Despite Apple's consistent opposition to the idea, EU nations are determined to follow the EU parliament's guidance on October 24th before its regulation is signed.
The EU parliament stated that the rule is part of their attempt to decrease waste from various charges and improve customers' sustainable options.
Small and medium-sized portable electronic gadgets, such as new smartphones, tablets, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems (GPS), headphones, earbuds, and laptops, shall be offered with a USB-C charger, according to the approved agenda.
As a result, five Apple devices are said to be switching to USB-C charging ports. According to Ming-Chu Kuo and Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), two Apple analysts, Apple is testing a new version of the iPhone with a USB-C port instead of the Lightning port. Historically, Apple insisted on utilizing the Lightning connector, but they now appear to be following EU requirements rather than taking a stand.
