Songhyeon-dong Park

Songhyeon-dong, surrounded by high walls in the center of Gwanghwamun for 110 years, has finally opened.

Songhyeon-dong was used as a U.S. military accommodation and U.S. Embassy accommodation after liberation from the Japanese colonial era and was returned to us in 1997. However, the government left ownership unattended for more than 20 years to Samsung Life Insurance and Korean Air.

This area was selected as the site for the construction of the Lee Kun-hee Donation Hall in November 2020, and the officials plan to open the site to citizens in advance for about two years until December 2024, before the construction begins.

Songhyeon-dong Park is about three times the size of Seoul City Hall Square. The project manager said about the site's temporary opening, "This is a space that has been blocked for more than a century. We lowered the 4-meter-high fence to 1.2 meters and opened a shortcut to create a wide grass square in the center."

Eight entrances have been made, and the trail is about 400 meters long. Pine trees, cosmos, sunflowers, and Zinnia peruviana are planted throughout the park. In the middle of the park, the giant moonlight 5 meters in diameter is surrounded by dozens of small moons.

In Songhyeon-dong Park, only minimal facilities are arranged. The city's purpose is to use it for various purposes, such as cultural and artistic events. The "Seoul Architecture Biennale" will be held here from May to October next year, and the global art fair "Freeze Seoul" is also being discussed here.

송현동 부지, 110년 금단의 땅 개방되다

110년 동안 광화문 중심지에서 높은 담장에 둘러싸여 시민들에게 공개되지 않던 송현동 부지가 드디어 모습을 드러냈다.

송현동 부지는 일제강점기부터 해방 후 미군 숙소와 미대사관 숙소 등으로 사용되었고, 1997년 정부에 반환되어 다시 우리에게로 돌아왔지만 소유권이 정부에서 삼성생명으로, 그리고 다시 대한항공으로 넘어가며 20여 년간 방치되다 서울시가 2020년 6월 공원화 계획을 발표한 뒤 공공 부지로 돌아왔다.

지난해 11월에는 이건희 기증관 건립 부지로 선정됐고, 건립공사가 시작되기 전인 2024년 12월까지 약 2년간 시민들에게 부지를 미리 개방할 계획이다.

종로구 송현동 녹지광장은 서울 시청광장 넓이의 약 3배에 달하는 크기이다. 이 부지의 임시개장에 대해 담당자는 “여기는 한 세기 넘게 막혀 있던 공간인데 높이 4m의 담장을 1.2m로 낮추고 지름길을 개설해 중앙부에는 넓은 잔디광장을 조성했다”고 설명했다.

시민들이 자연스럽게 접근할 수 있도록 8곳에 출입구가 만들어졌고 산책로는 약 400여 미터의 길이이다. 공원 곳곳에는 소나무, 코스모스, 해바라기, 백일홍 등이 심어져 있다. 공원 중간에는 지름 5미터의 커다란 달 조명을 수십 개의 작은 달이 둘러싸고 있는 조형물이 전시되었다.

넓은 녹지 광장에는 최소한의 시설물만 배치되어 있다. 문화예술 행사 등 다양한 용도로 활용하려는 시의 취지이다. 내년 5~10월에는 ‘서울건축비엔날레’가 이곳에서 열리고, 세계적 아트페어 ‘프리즈 서울’도 이곳에서 개최하는 방안을 논의 중이다.
