Is the Geomungo a Chinese instrument?

Is the Geomungo a Chinese instrument? To answer this question that might easily start a historical war, we need to look at the origins of this instrument. The story of how the Geomungo was made from a Guqin is not very well known. Originating from China, the Guqin(古琴) is a prestigious instrument loved by many. The instrument has seven strings in total and is played using the right hand while the left presses the string.  Many famous sages of China loved to play the Guqin. Even Confucius, a known music enthusiast, enjoyed playing this instrument.

According to the Samguk Sagi, the king of Goguryeo received a present. The present, which turned out to be the Guqin, was given by a person from China, which was ruled by the Qin Dynasty. To the king’s dismay, no one in Goguryeo knew how to play it, for it was a sacred Chinese instrument played only by people of importance. The king soon announced that anyone who could figure out how to play it would be given a big prize. A man named Wang San Ak comes to greet the king with joyous tidings. He had figured out how to play it. However, he only figured it out after he fixed it and made big adjustments to the Guqin. Thanks to his musical talents, he wrote and played over a hundred pieces on the new instrument.

The new instrument had frets now and was played with a stick called Suldae. It was also given the name Geomungo since it could no longer be considered a Guqin. Although the Geomungo was made from a Guqin, it has too many differences to be called the same. As time passed, more adjustments were made while techniques evolved and changed. If the  Geomungo is considered a Chinese instrument because of its origins being tied to the Guqin, then pretty much everything would be regarded as Chinese. We all agree although China invented gunpowder, they did not invent the other models and adjustments made afterward. The Guqin and the Geomungo are also the same cases. Although the Geomungo’s origins come from the Guqin, its adjustments and changes make it undeniably different.

If no one had written down the story of how the Geomungo was made, would anyone think that the Geomungo was made with a Guqin or even debate its roots?

거문고는 중국악기일까?

거문고는 과연 중국의 악기일까? 자칫 토론 전쟁을 일으킬 수 있는 이 질문을 답하려면 먼저 이 악기의 유래를 알아야 한다. 거문고가 고금을 바꿔 만들었다는 사실을 아는 사람들이 흔하지 않다. 중국에서 유래되는 악기 고금(古琴)은 한때 상류층과 지식인들이 즐겨 연주하던 악기다. 줄은 7개에 오른손으로 뜯고 왼손으론 누르는 악기이다. 우리가 잘 아는 지식인들도 이 악기를 연주했는데, 그중 한 명은 음악을 매우 좋아하는 공자이다.

삼국사기에 의하면 거문고는 고금을 바꿔 만들었다고 쓰여 있다. 고구려의 왕은 진나라에서 온 사람에게 고금을 선물받았다. 슬프게도 그 당시 고구려에 고금을 연주할 줄 아는 이가 없었다. 이는 중국에서도 귀한 이들만 연주하는 악기라서다. 왕은 이 악기를 연주할 줄 아는 자에게 큰 상을 줄 거라 선언했다. 이때 왕산악이라는 자가 연주할 줄 안다고 말을 했는데, 사실은 그 악기를 아예 새로운 악기로 고쳐 온 것뿐이었다. 그래도 새로 만든 악기를 가지고 100개 넘는 곡들을 연주하고 작곡하였다 한다.

새로 고쳐온 악기는 괘가 더해졌고 연주는 손이 아닌 술대로 연주하게 되었다. 이름은 후에 더 이상 고금이 아니니 거문고라고 지어졌다. 거문고는 고금을 바꿔 만들었지만 같은 점보다 다른 점이 더 많기 때문에 똑같다고 할 수 없다. 시간이 지나며 연주 방법과 기술도 바뀌었다. 중국이 화약을 발명하였다 해서 그 후에 더 정교히 만들어진 권총을 발명한 것이 아닌 것처럼 거문고는 중국의 악기가 아니다. 거문고가 고금을 변형해 만들었다 해도 그 바뀐 점들은 다 고금에 대해 아무것도 모르는 한국인이 만든 것이다. 또한 그 바뀐 점들 덕분에 이 악기가 원래 고금을 바꿔 만들었다는 것도 모른다.

만약 거문고가 고금을 고쳐 만들었다는 것을 아무도 몰랐다면, 거문고가 고금을 고쳐 만들었다는 것을 알 수 있었을까? 거문고가 중국 악기라고 주장하는 일이 있었을까?
