COVID-19: A Need for a Change

It has been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic was first introduced to the world. Our lives have drastically changed as wearing masks have become a social norm. In the midst of a global crisis that the pandemic has put the world on, a mutation of the virus triggered a new lockdown in the UK and possibly the whole world.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the mutant coronavirus, which has spread from the UK, has some possibilities where the current molecular testing cannot detect those mutants. A change in the genome system of the virus can cause a malfunction in the molecular testing, unable to clearly distinguish the contaminated and the uncontaminated. Because of this mutation, the testing methods of the companies Thermo Fisher Scientific, Applied DNA Science, and Mehta Bio-Tech need some changes to discern the contaminated effectively.
There was also a mutation in South Africa, which also raises more concern about how we should counteract these mutations. For the mutation that happened in South Africa, there were several changes in the spike(S) protein. The spike protein, a protein that enables the virus to enter and infect the human cells, acts as a key factor in the contamination process. Luckily, the current vaccines are thought to still be effective against the mutants in South Africa since the various mutations have not altered the shape of the spike protein.

Although the world has adapted to the pandemic crisis to some extent, we still have to be vigilant and alerted as the virus is posing new threats every day. The most urgent need is a development in the biotechnological field to effectively counteract the mutating viruses. Although there are still numerous obstacles to go over, the efforts and hardships that humankind will face will become a base for future developments.

COVID-19: 변화의 필요성

코로나19 전염병이 발생한지 벌써 1년이 지났다. 이제는 마스크를 쓰는 것이 당연한 것이 되었고 우리의 삶은 급격하게 변했으며, 이 전염병이 초래한 국제적 혼란 속에서 변종 바이러스들이 영국, 그리고 잠재적으로는 전세계를 다시 한 번 흔들고 있다.

미국 식품의약국에 따르면, 영국발 변종 코로나 바이러스는 현재의 감염 검사 방식들로는 검출이 안 될 가능성도 있다고 한다. 변종으로 인해 바이러스의 게놈이 바뀌어 분자 검사 방식으로는 감염 확인을 제대로 할 수 없을 뿐더러, 감염검사를 제공하는 Thermo Fisher Scientific, Applied DNA Science, 그리고 Mehta Bio Tech 등의 회사들은 검사 방식을 바꿔야 한다.

남아프리카에서도 변종 바이러스가 등장하여 변종에 대한 위기감을 한층 더 고조시켰다. 남아프리카의 변종의 경우에는 S단백질에 변경이 있지만 바이러스가 인체 세포들에 침입하여 감염시키는 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하는 S단백질은 다행히 남아프리카의 변종에서는 그 모양에는 큰 변화가 없어 현재 개발된 백신으로 대응이 가능할 것으로 보인다.

아무리 코로나 바이러스 대응에 어느 정도 익숙해졌다 하더라도 항상 긴장의 끈을 늦추면 안된다. 코로나 바이러스는 매일매일 새로운 위협들을 가하고 있으며, 우리도 그에 발맞춰 변할 필요가 있다.

우선 가장 변화가 필요한 부분은 생명공학 기술의 발전이다. 코로나 바이러스의 변종이 출몰함에 따라 그에 대한 대응책도 더 철저히 준비되어야 한다. 아직 거쳐야 할 시련이 많지만, 재난에 대응하면서 우리가 쏟아부은 노력과 헤쳐나간 고난들은 모두 미래 발전을 위한 밑거름이 될 것이다.
