JanuszKorczak was born in 1878 in a wealthy Jewish family in Poland Warsaw. His father passed away from mental illness when he was young. He was concerned that his children might get inherit the mental illness, so he refused to get married. However, he loved children that he became a pediatrician to take care of children. However, as World War 2 broke out in 1939, he sacrificed himself as a pediatrician and found an orphanage for Jewish war orphans. According to the Nuremberg trial, the sign of red Js was stamped on the Jewish passport. People with red Js on their passport could not transfer to other places except for the Jewish peninsula. It was for the upcoming Holocaust. Janusz himself was excluded apprehension list due to his authority of being a pediatrician at the past but his 198 orphans could not escape from their fate and had to face multiple times of critical situations.
Janusz always stayed with the children even when they were arrested for the concentration camp. He made a tremendous effort to save his orphans by using his own money, offering a bribe to take his orphans back home, and without hesitation, begging on streets to feed the children.
However, it was impossible for Janusz to change the Jewish orphans’ fate during the holocaust. In 1942, the Nazis command the children to get on the train heading to the Treblinka concentration camp. Back in WW1, taking a train to the camp meant they will end up in a gas chamber for death.
Janusz dressed the orphans in their fanciest clothes and silently took their hands to get on the train. One child who foresaw their deaths cried and became anxious. He held one of each child’s hands and calmed them. In fact, Janusz was not in the arrest list, and the officer who recognized Janusz gave him a chance to escape the camp but he refused to leave his children behind.
"If our children are scared of their first experience on a train, then someone should hold their hands. I will never leave these children."
Janusz, who showed true humanity, received a glorious death with his children in the gas chamber of Treblinka camp. It has been over 80 years, since JanuszKorczak's death but the world is continuously unsparing in its praise.

야누스가 보여주는 인류애 - <야누슈 코르착의 아이들>
야누스 코르착은 마더 테레사나 마틴 루터 킹과 같이, 인류애를 보여준 위인 중에서는 비교적 대중들에게 덜 알려진 인물이다. 그가 쌓은 업적은 마더 테레사 같이 거창하지는 않지만, 그의 작지만 강렬한 행동은 경쟁에 지친 현대인들에게 다시 한 번 인류애의 감동을 선사한다.
야누스 코르착 박사는 1878년 폴란드 바르샤바의 부유한 유대인 집안에서 태어났다.그의 아버지는 야누스가 어릴때 정신질환으로 돌아가셨는데, 이 때문에 코르착은 자신의 아이도 정신질환을 유전으로 가지게 될까 결혼조차 하지않았다. 그러나 아이들을 너무 좋아한 코르착은 소아과 의사가 되었고 어린아이들을 지극정성으로 돌보았지만, 1939년 2차 세계대전 발발 이후 독일이 폴란드를 점령하면서 소아과 의사를 그만두고 유대인 전쟁고아들을 위한 고아원을 운영하게 된다. 나치군의 압박이 하루가 멀다하고 이어져 갔다. 심지어는 뉘른베르크 재판에 따라 유대인의 여권에 빨간 제이 도장을 찍고서 유대인 거주지역을 따로 만들어 유대인들이 거주지역 밖으로 나갈 수 없게끔 관리하였다.곧 다가올 유대인 대학살을 위함이었다. 야누스 본인은 소아과 의사시절의 명성으로 관리대상에서 제외가 되었지만 그의 198명의 고아들은 그러지 못했고 번번히 위기가 찾아왔다.아이들이 수용소로 끌려갔을때 야누스는 언제나 아이들과 함께했다. 자신의 사비를 털어 뇌물을 바치고 길거리 구걸도 마다하지 않은 그는 자신의 핏줄은 아니지만 아이들을 지키려고 엄청난 노력을 했다. 하지만 1942년, 야누스의 노력은 더이상 빛을 발하지 못하고 고아원 아이들은 Treblinka 수용소로 가는 기차를 타야만 하는 운명을 마주했다. 기차를 탄 유대인들은 대부분 수용소의 독가스실로 후송된 후 죽음을 맞이해야했다. 그리고 아이들도 예외는 아니었다.
죽음을 예감한 아이들이 울면서 불안해했지만 야누스는 아이들 한 명 한 명의 손을 잡아주면서 진정시켰다 그러고선 당당히 그들의 손을 잡고 수용소로 가는 기차에 올라탔다.
“우리 아이들이 기차를 처음타서 무서워하면 누군가 손을 잡아줘야하지 않겠나? 난 결코 이 아이들의 곁을 떠나지 않을 것이네.”
야누스는 처형 명단에도 없었고 중간에 독일장교가 그에게 도망갈 기회를 주었지만 아이들의 마지막을 편안하게 보내주기 위해 자진해서 198명의 아이들과 독가스실에 들어간 것이다.
그렇게 진정한 인류애를 보여준 야누스와 그의 194명의 아이들은 treblinka 수용소의 독가스실에서 마지막까지 함께했다. 이러한 야누스 코르착의 행동과 그가 아이들에게 보여준 사랑은 아직까지 사람들의 큰 귀감이 되고 찬사를 받고 있다.
우리는 경쟁을 하면서 살아간다. 그리고 경쟁에서 항상 승리자와 패배자는 생긴다. 하지만 현대사회의 치열한 경쟁 속에서 야누스 코르착 박사가 보여준 작지만 큰 인류애를 교훈삼아 차갑고 치열한 경쟁사회 속에서 작게나마 따뜻한 인류애를 느껴 볼 수 있다. 수능이 한 달이 채 안 남은 지금, <야누슈 코르착의 아이들>을 읽고 지친 마음을 달래 줄 위로를 받아보는 건 어떨까?
