Introduction to PCSK9

Too much cholesterol can lead to problems like heart disease or attacks in the body. Due to this, the low-density lipoprotein receptors (LDLRs) help track these cholesterols in your bloodstream and prevent them from causing any harm. This process prevents the body from any cardiovascular threats. 

However, PCSK9 can interrupt this process. The PCSK9 gene, in brief explanation, helps give instructions to proteins that help regulate the amount of “bad” cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) in the bloodstream. It plays an essential role in regulating cholesterol levels in the body while degrading the LDL receptors.

After the PCSK9 proprotein finishes balancing the amount of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream, with the abundant amount, they start signaling the receptors as part of these harmful cholesterols. They would start binding to them for destruction. This will prevent the receptors’ job from future use in clearing the LDL cholesterol. The amount of LDL cholesterol after this process would increase and would expand risks for cardiovascular problems. 

Through years of research and knowledge, researchers recently developed medications to inhibit the PCSK9 genes. This vaccine works by blocking the ability of PCSK9 to degrade the LDL receptors, allowing for the regulation and removal of LDL cholesterol. This medication is beneficial for people with high cholesterol levels who are at risk. Not only that, it has been seen that this newly developed medication has a better impact even to patients that had no effect in previous medications relating to this.
